MV Rena Oil Spil

On the Wednesday, 5 October 2011, around 2:20am while  going in the clear weather from Napier to Tauranga and with acceleration of 17 knots. The Rena ran ashore on the Astrolabe Reef. The ship was carrying 1000 to 1400 containers, and eight of the contained dicey materials, including 1,700 tonnes of oil and marine diesel oil.

By the time it was the 9th of October 2011, a 5 kilometer oil slick exposed wildlife and the space(the rich fishing waters).

The Oil from the MV Rena started to wash against the shore at Mount Maunganui, a day after the Oil exposed to the wildlife. (10 October 2011).

10 October 2011 was bad weather at night, and that caused the Rena to shift onto the reef, the crew was abandon. When that Rena shifted onto the reef it had caused a huge problem and causing a more oil spill, 150-350 tonnes of oil.

The next day, 11 October 2011 the strong winds caused the ship to turn over, about 19 degrees.  After that had happened it made 30-70 containers to float on the high waters. Luckily none of the containers contained dicey cargo.
But the containers afterwards began washing ashore at, Motiti Island.

Mid-day 12 October 2011 flying cameras showed a really large crack in the Hull of the MV Rena. It was increasing the fears that the ship could have a higher chance of breaking fast. It showed also a container surrounded by smoke suggesting that a chemical reaction was occurring.
